Apparently somewhere in Australia (which we can't find on Google Maps yet!) my wife and I, relying almost totally on the faultless assistance of you, Chantal, and Anastassia at Proper Finance, are having a house built...
Living in Japan, with our savings in the UK, and a dream of building a house for investment/retirement in Australia, the logical thing seemed to be to approach my UK bank for a mortgage. We found our land, a builder, and a house we liked, and had our mortgage provisionally approved. It was only when I mentioned that the house hadn't been built yet, that my bank told me they couldn't lend for construction. As I'm not an Australian citizen it would be impossible for me to buy a second-hand house.
I didn't immediately think of trying elsewhere for finance, but when the idea did occur to me, I started looking on the Internet, and found Proper Finance. I think other people have mentioned that Anton and his staff were too good to be true. And someone even said that their husband thought Proper Finance was some sort of Internet scam - absolutely not!! "Excellent" doesn't do Proper Finance justice.
I cannot imagine a more professional organisation (while at the same time being completely approachable, accessible, reassuring, and friendly). Nothing is too much trouble, even when I think some of my stress-induced questions were bordering on the inane!
The contact I had at the solicitor's that was recommended was also in the "too good to be true" category. Again, faultless, prompt, and always accurate information from a very approachable company.
One day we'll come down to Melbourne and take you all out for dinner.
Anton, I'm not sure what else I can say, other than I definitely couldn't have done it without you. If there is any other aspect of your service you would like me to comment on, please don't hesitate to ask. Hopefully there is something here that you can use on web site.

Hi Anton,
We first contacted Proper Finance when we were overseas. After a long and profitable stay abroad, we were in the best possible financial position, but had been out of Australia for so long, we could not find an Australian bank that was prepared to deal with us.
Due to a change in family circumstances we unexpectedly relocated back to Australia before we used their services. Given the boom conditions in Western Australia, we were able to immediately start a profitable business, continuing a ten year history of successful self employment. At this stage we expected to be able to deal with Australian banks directly. However this quickly turned out not to be the case, with every bank we approached for a mortagage (and mortgage brokers) immediately refusing us because we did not have two years Australia trade history.
We contacted Proper Finance as they seemed to understand our position when we had talked to them previously. At this stage we had chosen a property, and Proper Finance were able to arrange a mortgage for it.
After having Proper Finance handle my business, I feel that I can recommend them, not just because they were able to close a difficult deal that others in their sector could not, but because the level of customer service they offered was impressive.
The following stood out :
- Even though we are in Western Austrlia and Proper Finance is located in Melobourne, they were able to make best use of technology to expedite the paperwork and identification requirements.
- I actually belive that their client facing and contact with us was higher than that I receive at my local bank branch.
- They were able to navigate us through the (considerable) paperwork involved in raising a mortagage. Despite us being remote, they were available to us immediately at any stage when we had questions or problems.
- Proper Finance clearly operates on a can do basis: any issues were tackled and resolved with a manner that left us with a growing feeling of confidence.
- While our applications were being processed, and in the time up until settlement, we were called often to let us know of any significant developments.
- Proper Finance gave us the full service shop treatment: apart from arranging the mortgage for us, they also helped us transfer funds back from overseas by introducing us to a reliable currency broker - which made us significant savings on exchange rates, and introduced us to a dependable settlement agent.
- After the deal was closed. They followed up, to make sure were completely happy with the deal, and the work that had been carried out on our behalf.
- Even though at this stage we could have our business, personal and mortgages handled directly by the back, we continue to be Proper Finance customers due to the high quality of the service and the track record of results.

When we decided to purchase a house in Australia, we were at a loss as to how to do this effectively from so far away...we're living on the other side of the world - literally - in the Caribbean. And with little to no knowledge of the Australian settlement process and legalities involved, we needed an organisation on the ground who could help - a company with expertise and local contacts - and most importantly, someone we felt we could trust.
Proper Finance Solutions were only one of a number of companies we contacted to see what they could offer us in this regard.
